As many of you are aware, on December 1, 2017, a significant increase went into effect for the cost to obtain state police criminal background checks. The fee jumped from $8.00 to $22.00. This jump in cost can have a significant impact on an organization’s operating budget, especially due to the amount of staff turnover in direct care positions.

In addition, Governor Wolf’s draft legislation to amend the Older Adult Protective Services Act includes a new requirement that new employees working with our elderly adults must also obtain an FBI clearance, regardless of length of residency in Pennsylvania. The cost of the FBI check is currently $22.60. Together, these requirements could add an additional $36.60 to the cost of each potential hire.

RCPA is asking our members to participate in a very brief survey (just 2 questions) to help us assess the impact of these changes. Please respond by close of business on Thursday, February 1, 2018. For further information contact Carol Ferenz.

The Social Security Advisory Board (SSAB) has released a report this month outlining recommendations on how to strengthen the Representative Payee Program of the Social Security Administration (SSA). This report is the result of a two-year study of the current Representative Payee Program serving more than 8 million vulnerable beneficiaries/recipients, including children and adults.

The five section report includes short-term recommendations to SSA and Congress, and also advocates for the Office of Management and Budget to pursue long-term structural changes which will involve comprehensive government-wide coordination efforts and cross-agency reforms. More information, as well as a link to the full report, is available on the SSAB website.

ODP and OMHSAS would like to introduce Jen Bankard as the contractor for this program. Jen is a certified MHFA instructor and has served as both a National Trainer and a Quality Evaluator for the MHFA program. You may contact her directly regarding scheduling a course in your area.

The campaign will convey the value and importance of community services for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and highlight the support networks that enable them to succeed.

The Foundation is sharing stories about people with I/DD, their families, and their communities; about providers and support networks; and about positive trends and exciting careers, by utilizing digital marketing, social, and traditional media. They are looking for stories about people – those receiving services, staff, or families, and are working with a public relations firm to assist with telling those stories.

For more information, or to participate, see this message from the ANCOR Foundation.

Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) is conducting a research study funded by the Center for Rural Pennsylvania, and is requesting that providers of employment or support coordination services for individuals with IDD participate in a survey. This information will be shared with the state agencies and the legislature to inform the policies and regulations that are being developed. The survey will be anonymous and takes approximately 15 – 20 minutes to complete. This project is time sensitive, so please take the time to respond. Please see this document for more information and to access the survey.
