Topic: Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) — An Overview and Practical Application

Note: This training satisfies the basic autism training requirement for Residential Performance-Based Contracting (PBC). Please see more details below on Continuing Education (CE) Credits. This training is an approved alternative to the SPeCTRUM offered on MyODP.

Over the years, the prevalence of autism has increased, Pennsylvania’s service delivery system for individuals with autism has expanded, and best practices to provide quality supports have emerged. To support the individual needs of each person with autism across the lifespan, an understanding of core characteristics must be established. It is also important to learn how the individual’s presentation of autism may change across settings and situations.

This training will provide attendees with an in-depth presentation on core characteristics of autism and the impact of the characteristics on daily life, routines, and activities. A review of common terms and basic principles used to change behavior, teach new skills, and develop practical application of best practices will be included. Opportunity for discussion and engagement will occur throughout the training in the virtual setting.

Who should attend?

Direct Support Professionals, Front Line Supervisors, and Program Managers supporting individuals with autism in residential and other home and community-based settings.

Professionals supporting individuals in the Adult Autism Waiver (AAW), Adult Community Autism Program (ACAP), Consolidated Person/Family-Directed Support (P/FDS), and Community Living waivers are encouraged to attend.

Where and when will sessions be held?

You must register separately for each session.

Continuing Education Units (CEU):

This training satisfies the basic autism training requirement for Residential Performance-Based Contracting measures CN-DD/Bx.01.1S and CN-DD/Bx.01.1CE for all Direct Support Professionals (DSPs), Frontline Supervisors (FLS), and program managers. This training also fulfills 6100 ongoing training requirements.

To receive a training certificate, attendees must attend both virtual sessions.

Hearing All Perspectives: The Development of a Multi-State, Multi-Diagnosis Youth Advisory Council

This presentation will discuss the formation of a novel and innovative version of a standard Youth Advisory Council (YAC). This particular YAC adds a twist to the traditional means of involving youth by creating a council combining voices of individuals served who have two very different diagnoses: those with an emotional/behavioral disorder (EBD) and those with an autism/intellectual disability (ASD/IDD). Spanning across three states, this internal YAC has been established to hear the voices of and to teach leadership principles and skills to those who are receiving the services offered by Devereux Advanced Behavioral Health.

Presenters:

  • Amy Kelly, MBA, MNM, National Director of Family Engagement, Devereux Advanced Behavioral Health
  • Judy Starr, JD, Deputy General Counsel, Devereux Advanced Behavioral Health

Objectives: Following this course, the learner will:

  • Describe the value of constituents’ voices from services and programs provided, regardless of individual communication type, cognitive ability, or diagnosis;
  • Discuss how to engage leadership and staff to support and sponsor a youth/constituent advisory council; and
  • List some “lessons from the journey” with do’s and don’ts when developing a youth advisory council.

Certificates of attendance are available to RCPA members who attend this webinar; anyone interested in a certificate should contact Cathy Barrick. The PA Department of Health’s (DOH) Bureau of Family Health is excited to announce a funding opportunity for Pennsylvania-based community-based organizations, public health organizations, local governments, or health care organizations that have the capacity to provide services to people with or at-risk for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in Pennsylvania. The opportunity will connect organizations to the Autism Diagnostic Clinic (ADC) program in order to increase access to diagnostic services for ASD and develop support systems for caregivers of children diagnosed with ASD. From March 6, 2025, until 1:30 pm April 17, 2025, DOH is soliciting applications. The overall goal of this funding is to provide access to autism diagnostic services along with community-based resources and education.

The Autism Diagnostic Clinic (ADC) program utilizes innovative telehealth technology to increase access to diagnostic services for ASD. The clinic partners with two health systems to expedite diagnoses for children aged 18 months to 3 years. Children who are initially screened as at-risk for ASD are referred from Early Intervention to the ADC, which then schedules diagnostic services for the children within six months of the referral.
