Please join us as the IPRC hosts special guest Terry Carolan from CARF International, who will share the new Disorders of Consciousness Program Standards.

Presenter Bio:

Terrence Carolan
Terrence Carolan, Managing Director of the Medical Rehabilitation and Aging Services accreditation areas at the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF), has more than 20 years of experience as a provider, administrator, and educator in the human services field. Terry joined CARF after working in clinical and administrative leadership positions within Select Medical’s Inpatient Rehabilitation Division and the Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation since 2001. Terry was a CARF surveyor for 10 years and holds a degree in physical therapy from Simmons College in Boston. He also recently completed his master’s degree in business administration from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

Objectives: At the end of this session, the learner will:

  • Describe recent research and guidance on the treatment of individuals with Disorders of Consciousness (DoC);
  • Discuss how CARF International has responded to guidance from the field to create Disorders of Consciousness Program Standards; and
  • Analyze how new DoC accreditation and recent research will enhance access to rehabilitation for children with DoC in the future.

Audience: This webinar is intended for all interested members of the rehabilitation team; attendees do not need to be CARF certified in order to attend.

Level: Beginner-Intermediate

As part of the Brain Injury Association of Pennsylvania’s (BIAPA) Clinical Forum Series, a pediatric-specific webinar will be offered on Tuesday, December 10, 2024, from 3:30 pm – 5:00 pm. The webinar, “Formalizing a Disorders of Consciousness Program for Pediatric Patients in Inpatient Rehabilitation at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP),” will discuss efforts for increased standardization of care, continuity/continuum of care, individualized components of the Disorders of Consciousness program at CHOP, discharge planning, and follow-up care.

The presenters of this free webinar are from multiple rehabilitation disciplines of the Disorders of Consciousness (DoC) program at CHOP. The session is intended for a professional audience.

Dr. Jonathan Pool
Speaker Bio:

Dr. Jonathan Pool is a music therapist and researcher at the Cambridge Institute for Music Therapy Research located in Cambridge, England. He is a senior arts therapist at Chroma, providing clinical supervision to many therapists across the United Kingdom.

He trained as a music therapist and then as a researcher at Anglia Ruskin University. He was awarded his PhD in 2013 for his research in brief group music therapy for cognitive functional gains and emotional needs of adult brain injury survivors in community neurorehabilitation.

Jonathan’s work includes developing interdisciplinary interventions for people with acquired brain injury and their families. As a researcher, he is dedicated to developing evidence on the use of music and music therapy in assessment and intervention for people affected by neurological impairments and diseases, with a special interest in disorders of consciousness. He is passionate about improving lives and reducing suffering through the use of music.

Objectives: At the end of this session, the learner will:

  • Understand why a music-based assessment is ideal for the assessment of children and young people with Disorders of Consciousness (DoC);
  • Gain knowledge of the development of the MuSICCA – a music-based assessment tool;
  • Learn how the MuSICCA is used to assess consciousness in pediatric DoC;
  • Learn about how the MuSICCA is being tested for validity, reliability, and clinical utility; and
  • Understand how it can support goal setting and planning of care and treatment.

Audience: This webinar is intended for all interested members of the rehabilitation team.

Level: Intermediate
