Chani Traube, MD, FAAP, FCCM
Speaker/Panelist Bio:
Dr. Chani Traube is Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Pediatric Critical Care, and Director of Clinical Research Mentoring for the Department of Pediatrics at Weill Cornell Medicine. She is also Chair of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) Collaborative Pediatric Critical Care Research Network (CPCCRN). Dr. Traube is a clinical researcher with expertise in pediatrics, pediatric critical illness, delirium, sedation, and PICU outcomes. She is the Principal Investigator for several NIH-funded multi-site studies investigating the epidemiology of delirium, pharmacokinetics of sedatives, and long-term cognitive outcomes in critically ill children.

Objectives: At the end of this session, the learner will:

  • Define pediatric delirium and its associated morbidity;
  • Describe the prevalence and morbidity of delirium in seriously ill children;
  • Recognize that delirium occurs frequently in children with Acquired Brain Injury during inpatient rehabilitation; and
  • Verify that widespread screening for pediatric delirium is feasible.

Audience: This webinar is intended for all members of the rehabilitation team, including medical staff, nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech language pathologists, licensed psychologists, mental health professionals, and other interested professionals.

IPRC is pleased to once again host Shari Wade, PhD, and Devi Miron Murphy, PhD, to discuss practical applications of a trauma-informed approach to pediatric rehabilitation delivery. By member request, this webinar will expand on the content delivered in their previous webinar, Trauma Informed Care in Pediatric Settings, which was held on October 4, 2022.

Speaker Bios:

Shari L. Wade, PhD

Dr. Shari Wade is a tenured professor at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and Director of Research in the Division of Rehabilitation Medicine at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. She is a highly experienced rehabilitation psychologist who has conducted federally-funded research examining outcomes of traumatic brain injury and factors that influence outcomes since 1991. This research has been widely cited (h-index = 65 and i10-index = 189) and shaped how the field understands the role of social environmental factors on recovery and the effects of TBI on child and family functioning over time. For the past 20+ years, she has conducted single site and multicenter randomized clinical trials of interventions to reduce morbidity following pediatric TBI, including some of the first Class 1 clinical trials. She pioneered the development and testing of technology-based interventions to reduce behavioral and family consequences of pediatric TBI, beginning with an R21 award from NICHD in 2001. She is currently conducting a multi-site RCT examining the efficacy of a brief, online intervention to reduce post-traumatic stress following medical trauma.

Devi Miron Murphy, PhD

Dr. Devi Miron Murphy is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and Director of Training, Clinical Psychology at the Tulane School of Medicine. Dr. Murphy’s clinical interests are psychotherapy and psychological assessment with youth and families. Specifically, her clinical activities include the assessment and treatment of young children and their families who have experienced trauma, such as abuse, neglect, exposure to domestic violence, and medical injuries. She is also interested in the evaluation and treatment of attachment disruptions. Dr. Murphy’s research interests include investigating long-term social, emotional, and cognitive outcomes in children who have had traumatic experiences and promoting sensitive caregiving for young children in foster care. Through her research and training endeavors, Dr. Murphy contributes to the development and dissemination of evidence-based treatments for traumatized youth.

Objectives: At the end of this session, the learner will:

  • Identify one or more tools to screen for PTSS;
  • List two strategies for working with children with PTSS during their rehabilitation stay;
  • Describe one approach for supporting families experiencing PTSS; and
  • Discuss how to manage vicarious trauma and identify one strategy for self-care.

Speaker Bio:
Azalia (Sally) De Arruda is a medical interpreter and the Language Service Manager at Mt. Washington Pediatric Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, where she has worked for the past 16 years. Sally began her career in the Admissions Department and was instrumental in the creation of the hospital’s Language Service Program that she now leads.

Sally holds a Master’s Degree in Health Administration and has specialized training as a medical interpreter, including coursework in The Community Interpreter 40-hour training course, Medical Terminology, Qualified Bilingual Staff Program, and ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview.

Sally is passionate that all patients should receive the best possible care, including those with limited English proficiency. Through her work on and with the rehabilitation team, Sally has developed a robust program to ensure that the best possible rehabilitation care be provided even when language barriers are present.

Objectives: At the end of this session, the learner will:

  • Identify the key differences between an interpreter and a translator;
  • Recognize behaviors, practices, or pitfalls to avoid when working with a medical interpreter;
  • Implement three practical ways for a clinician to interact with a medical interpreter during a medical appointment; and
  • Discuss the value of a medical interpreter as a member of the rehab team.

Penny Adams is an Occupational Therapist and Inpatient Pediatric Therapy Team Lead on the Inpatient Pediatric Unit at the Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan. She earned her master’s degree in occupational therapy from Grand Valley State University in 2004 and has worked at Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital for the past 17 years, treating children of all ages in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Penny drives her unit’s Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion efforts and skillfully engages her colleagues, patients, and their families in impactful learning activities.

Objectives: At the end of this session, the learner will:

  • Summarize the importance of incorporating DEI activities into the pediatric rehabilitation environment;

She has experience in teaching, nursing leadership, and clinical practice. She was a fellow in the Duke Johnson and Johnson Nurse Leadership program 2014–2015 and 2020–2021. Dr. Cuomo is a member of the National Association of Pediatric Nurses Practitioners and Ohio Association of Advanced Practice Nurses. She is a Co-Investigator on the Project IMPACTT grant sponsored by HRSA. She serves on the Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Council and the Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Preceptor Council. Julie holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from The University of Akron, a Master’s Degree in Nursing from Case Western Reserve University, and was a fellow in the Duke Johnson and Johnson Nurse Leadership program from 2020–2021. Julie is a member of the National Association of Pediatric Nurses Practitioners. She is a Co-Investigator on the Project IMPACTT grant sponsored by HRSA. She serves on the Advanced Practice Credentialing and Privileging Committee for the Cleveland Clinic.

Speaker Bios:

Sarah Economides, PT, DPT, PCS
Sarah Economides is a physical therapist on the inpatient pediatric unit at Madonna Rehabilitation Hospitals, joining the team 11 years ago. Sarah specializes in treating children with severe neurologic and pulmonary disabilities. Prior to joining the Madonna team, Sarah worked in multiple pediatric settings, including NICU, school-based, outpatient, and acute care. She is a Board Certified Specialist in Pediatric Physical Therapy and a Certified Child Passenger Safety Technician (CPST), with additional training for transporting children with special needs. Sarah has extensive experience managing positioning needs for transportation with children and adolescents with physical disabilities. As a graduate of Creighton University’s Doctor of Physical Therapy and Pediatric Physical Therapy Residency programs, she also enjoys collaborating with local PT and PTA programs as a guest lecturer and lab assistant, as well as a mentor for Creighton University’s Pediatric Residency Program.

Kristin Luethke, CTRS
Kristin Luethke is a recreation therapist at Madonna Rehabilitation Hospitals, bringing over 25 years of clinical experience to her team. During her tenure, she has worked across various teams, and in 2001, she settled into her role within Madonna’s pediatric and traumatic brain injury program. As a certified child passenger safety technician, child passenger safety instructor, and a Transporting Children with Special Healthcare Needs instructor, Kristin collaborated with others across the state to create the Nebraska All Kids Ride Safe Program. She also consults with various teams at Madonna to provide safe transportation options for pediatric and adult patients. Kristin graduated from Northwest Missouri State University in 1997.

Objectives:
At the end of this session, the learner will:

  • Discuss the impact of crash mechanics relative to body position, size, and restraints;
  • Identify the importance of car seat evaluation and safety;
  • Advocate for optimal seating and positioning for all children during transportation; and
  • Problem-solve common positioning challenges during transportation for pediatric clients with special health needs.
