Join the National Center for Advancing Person-centered Practices and Services (NCAPPS) for a webinar exploring the dignity of risk. Dignity of risk is the idea that taking reasonable risks is essential to supporting autonomy for people with disabilities, balancing the need for autonomy while keeping a person’s health and welfare in mind. Participants will hear from providers, national experts, people with lived experience, and state representatives as they examine best practices for addressing and assessing risk through a person-centered lens.

Speakers include:

  • Mary Lou Bourne;
  • Carl Lipford;
  • Elise Messner; and
  • Shannon Nehus.

Join Disability Employment Technical Assistance Center (DETAC) for a webinar in celebration of Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month. The webinar will provide an overview of DD councils and their role in systems changes across the country as well as give viewers a chance to learn more about the innovative initiatives that DD Councils are taking to advance employment opportunities and outcomes for people with DD.

Pittsburgh Arts & Lectures presents Dr. Ibram X. Kendi, author of “How to be an Antiracist” and “How to Raise an Antiracist,” at 6:00 pm on Thursday, March 9, 2023, at the Carnegie Library Lecture Hall in Oakland.

Dr. Kendi is appearing with the release of his new children’s book, “The Making of Butterflies,” a retelling of work by Zora Neale Hurston from her folktale anthology “Mules and Men.” His conversation with Dr. Valerie Kinloch, Dean of University of Pittsburgh’s School of Education, will focus on the importance of these works of literature within the framework of his antiracism work. Acting Secretary Dr. Val Arkoosh and leadership from the Department of Human Services (DHS) will host a webinar to discuss the proposed 2023/24 budget for the department. The briefing will take place at 9:00 am on Thursday, March 9.

Pennsylvania’s ABLE program provides individuals with qualifying disabilities a way to save and invest without affecting their benefits. What is new with ABLE? Join PATF and find out!

A lot has happened in the last few months, and more is to come. Diana Fishlock of the Pennsylvania Treasury Department will discuss the details of Pennsylvania’s ABLE program. Susan Tachau and Karen Hassett, Pennsylvania Assistive Technology Foundation (PATF), along with the following partners will provide a brief introduction:

  • Melissa Hawkins, Director, Pennsylvania Office of Deaf and Hard of Hearing;
  • Amy Nieves, Executive Director, Mayor’s Commission for People with Disabilities; and
  • Amy Levine, Director of Institutional Advancement, Pennsylvania School for the Deaf.

ASL, CART, and Spanish interpretation will be provided for the webinar. If you require additional accommodations, please let PATF know if you require additional accommodations when you register for the webinar no later than March 1, 2023.

PLEASE NOTE: PATF will host an in-person workshop with ASL and tactile interpreters in late Spring 2023.

The Office of Long-Term Living (OLTL) has released the registration information and agenda for the March 1, 2023, Managed Long-Term Services and Supports (MLTSS) Subcommittee meeting. The meeting will be held at the PA Department of Education Building’s Honors Suite, 1st Floor, at 333 Market St. in Harrisburg, or via webinar from 10:00 am – 1:00 pm.
