Speaker Bio:
Azalia (Sally) De Arruda is a medical interpreter and the Language Service Manager at Mt. Washington Pediatric Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, where she has worked for the past 16 years. Sally began her career in the Admissions Department and was instrumental in the creation of the hospital’s Language Service Program that she now leads.

Sally holds a Master’s Degree in Health Administration and has specialized training as a medical interpreter, including coursework in The Community Interpreter 40-hour training course, Medical Terminology, Qualified Bilingual Staff Program, and ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview.

Sally is passionate that all patients should receive the best possible care, including those with limited English proficiency. Through her work on and with the rehabilitation team, Sally has developed a robust program to ensure that the best possible rehabilitation care be provided even when language barriers are present.

Objectives: At the end of this session, the learner will:

  • Identify the key differences between an interpreter and a translator;
  • Recognize behaviors, practices, or pitfalls to avoid when working with a medical interpreter;
  • Implement three practical ways for a clinician to interact with a medical interpreter during a medical appointment; and
  • Discuss the value of a medical interpreter as a member of the rehab team.

Penny Adams is an Occupational Therapist and Inpatient Pediatric Therapy Team Lead on the Inpatient Pediatric Unit at the Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan. She earned her master’s degree in occupational therapy from Grand Valley State University in 2004 and has worked at Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital for the past 17 years, treating children of all ages in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Penny drives her unit’s Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion efforts and skillfully engages her colleagues, patients, and their families in impactful learning activities.

Dr. Cuomo is a member of the National Association of Pediatric Nurses Practitioners and Ohio Association of Advanced Practice Nurses. She is a Co-Investigator on the Project IMPACTT grant sponsored by HRSA. She serves on the Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Council and the Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Preceptor Council. Dr. Cuomo’s professional interests are in the area of pediatric to adult transition.

Julie H. Corder is a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner in the Pediatric Complex Care Clinic at the Cleveland Clinic. This multidisciplinary program cares for pediatric patients with multiple chronic conditions with a dependence on technology. A primary interest and passion for Julie is developing processes to ensure high level care for this population throughout their lifespan as they transition from pediatric to adult care. Julie holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from The University of Akron, a Master’s Degree in Nursing from Case Western Reserve University, and was a fellow in the Duke Johnson and Johnson Nurse Leadership program from 2020–2021. Julie is a member of the National Association of Pediatric Nurses Practitioners. She is a Co-Investigator on the Project IMPACTT grant sponsored by HRSA. She serves on the Advanced Practice Credentialing and Privileging Committee for the Cleveland Clinic.

Sarah Economides, PT, DPT, PCS
Sarah Economides is a physical therapist on the inpatient pediatric unit at Madonna Rehabilitation Hospitals, joining the team 11 years ago. Sarah specializes in treating children with severe neurologic and pulmonary disabilities. Prior to joining the Madonna team, Sarah worked in multiple pediatric settings, including NICU, school-based, outpatient, and acute care. She is a Board Certified Specialist in Pediatric Physical Therapy and a Certified Child Passenger Safety Technician (CPST), with additional training for transporting children with special needs. Sarah has extensive experience managing positioning needs for transportation with children and adolescents with physical disabilities. As a graduate of Creighton University’s Doctor of Physical Therapy and Pediatric Physical Therapy Residency programs, she also enjoys collaborating with local PT and PTA programs as a guest lecturer and lab assistant, as well as a mentor for Creighton University’s Pediatric Residency Program.

Kristin Luethke, CTRS
Kristin Luethke is a recreation therapist at Madonna Rehabilitation Hospitals, bringing over 25 years of clinical experience to her team. During her tenure, she has worked across various teams, and in 2001, she settled into her role within Madonna’s pediatric and traumatic brain injury program. As a certified child passenger safety technician, child passenger safety instructor, and a Transporting Children with Special Healthcare Needs instructor, Kristin collaborated with others across the state to create the Nebraska All Kids Ride Safe Program. She also consults with various teams at Madonna to provide safe transportation options for pediatric and adult patients. Kristin graduated from Northwest Missouri State University in 1997.

Objectives:
At the end of this session, the learner will:

  • Discuss the impact of crash mechanics relative to body position, size, and restraints;
  • Identify the importance of car seat evaluation and safety;
  • Advocate for optimal seating and positioning for all children during transportation; and
  • Problem-solve common positioning challenges during transportation for pediatric clients with special health needs.

Speaker Bio:
Tabi Evans, PsyD, (they/them) is a Pediatric Psychology Fellow working in Critical Care at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, where they provide consultation to patients in a critical care/medical trauma setting and outpatient therapy to children, teens, and their families. Additionally, Tabi is an educator for other medical and psychology providers, with a focus on providing trauma-informed care when working with transgender and non-binary youth and their families.

Objectives:
During this session, the learner will:

  • Gain a basic understanding of trauma, trauma-informed care, and unique trauma risk factors for trans and gender diverse youth;
  • Provide examples of trauma-informed care for diverse patients;
  • Learn clinical practice skills (affirming language, balancing family/patient dynamics, providing appropriate referrals, etc.) to improve care for gender diverse youth; and
  • Practice identifying potentially traumatic stimuli for gender-diverse patients within a medical/therapeutic setting.

Speaker Bios:
Devi Miron Murphy, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and Director of Training, Clinical Psychology at the Tulane School of Medicine. Dr. Murphy’s clinical interests are psychotherapy and psychological assessment with youth and families. Specifically, her clinical activities include the assessment and treatment of young children and their families who have experienced trauma, such as abuse, neglect, exposure to domestic violence, and medical injuries. She is also interested in the evaluation and treatment of attachment disruptions. Dr. Murphy’s research interests include investigating long-term social, emotional, and cognitive outcomes in children who have had traumatic experiences and promoting sensitive caregiving for young children in foster care. Through her research and training endeavors, Dr. Murphy contributes to the development and dissemination of evidence-based treatments for traumatized youth.

Dr. Shari Wade is a tenured professor at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and Director of Research in the Division of Rehabilitation Medicine at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. She is a highly experienced rehabilitation psychologist who has conducted federally-funded research examining outcomes of traumatic brain injury and factors that influence outcomes since 1991. This research has been widely cited (h-index = 65 and i10-index = 189) and shaped how the field understands the role of social environmental factors on recovery and the effects of TBI on child and family functioning over time. For the past 20+ years, she has conducted single site and multicenter randomized clinical trials of interventions to reduce morbidity following pediatric TBI, including some of the first Class 1 clinical trials. She pioneered the development and testing of technology-based interventions to reduce behavioral and family consequences of pediatric TBI, beginning with an R21 award from NICHD in 2001. She is currently conducting a multi-site RCT examining the efficacy of a brief, online intervention to reduce post-traumatic stress following medical trauma.

Objectives:
At the end of the session, the learner will:

  • Define and list key principles of trauma-informed care;
  • Identify 3 indicators of post-traumatic stress;
  • Define secondary traumatic stress;
  • Identify a brief screening tool for Post-Traumatic Stress Syndrome (PTSS); and
  • Describe key components of brief trauma-informed interventions for PTSS following traumatic injury.

Christina Patterson, MD, is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Child Neurology at the University of Pittsburgh. She is also the Director of Epilepsy Services, the Medical Director of the Pediatric Epilepsy Surgery Program, and the Director of the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. Dr. Patterson has clinical and research interests in the fields of Child Neurology, Epilepsy, and Clinical Neurophysiology and is board-certified in Clinical Neurophysiology, Epilepsy, and Neurology, with Special Qualification in Child Neurology.

Objectives:
At the end of the session, the learner will:

  • Define what a seizure is and what epilepsy is when speaking to patients and parents;
  • Identify seizures in pediatric patients and how different types of seizures are classified and diagnosed as epilepsy; and

Edith Jacobson Chernoff, MD, is a practicing, board-certified pediatrician at La Rabida Children’s Hospital, a children’s hospital dedicated to children with chronic disease and developmental disorders, where she is medical director of outpatient services. Dr. Chernoff is also an Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatrics’ section of academic pediatrics at the University of Chicago and a board-certified clinical geneticist. She is medical consultant for Early Intervention CFC#10. Her interests are in Medical Home for children with medical complexity, genetic disorders, patient and family quality of life, and patient safety/quality improvement.

Amelia Miller serves as the Premier Kids Program Lead & Infant Mental Health Specialist at La Rabida Children’s Hospital. She received her Master’s in Child Development along with a specialization in Infancy from Erikson Institute in Chicago, IL. Amelia pursued further specialization with the Infant Mental Health Certificate program at Erikson Institute, completed in 2015. She received her certification from Parent-Child Relationship Programs as a trainer of the Keys to Caregiving & NCAST Parent Child Interaction tools. Amelia also practices as a DIR practitioner and an Infant Massage Instructor.

Laura Kahan is the section chief of Infant Development in the Developmental & Rehabilitative Services Department at La Rabida Children’s Hospital in Chicago. She holds a Master’s degree in Early Childhood Development, with an Infancy Specialization, from Erikson Institute in Chicago, IL, and an Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health Credential from the Illinois Association for Infant Mental Health. She has been a practicing Developmental Therapist in the Illinois Early Intervention system since 2004 and is a Certified Infant Massage Instructor. Laura has over 25 years’ experience supporting underserved parents and children in Chicago.

  • Discuss how infant attachment affects development into adulthood and how traumatic events, including medical trauma, adversely affect brain development and the ability to interact and learn.
  • Review the design of an inpatient program using a specially trained rehabilitation team and validated assessment tools to support healthy parent–child attachment to enhance child development.
  • Learn how a primary care medical home for children with medical complexities embedded mental health care into the program through use of screenings and specialty sessions during and outside of primary care visits.
  • Review changes made to care delivery during the COVID-19 pandemic, including successes and failures.
  • Explore findings on quality of life ratings from families receiving care and discuss how these findings were used to enhance program offerings and improve family supports.
