Speaker Bio:
Azalia (Sally) De Arruda is a medical interpreter and the Language Service Manager at Mt. Washington Pediatric Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, where she has worked for the past 16 years. Sally began her career in the Admissions Department and was instrumental in the creation of the hospital’s Language Service Program that she now leads.

Sally holds a Master’s Degree in Health Administration and has specialized training as a medical interpreter, including coursework in The Community Interpreter 40-hour training course, Medical Terminology, Qualified Bilingual Staff Program, and ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview.

Sally is passionate that all patients should receive the best possible care, including those with limited English proficiency. Through her work on and with the rehabilitation team, Sally has developed a robust program to ensure that the best possible rehabilitation care be provided even when language barriers are present.

Objectives: At the end of this session, the learner will:

  • Identify the key differences between an interpreter and a translator;
  • Recognize behaviors, practices, or pitfalls to avoid when working with a medical interpreter;
  • Implement three practical ways for a clinician to interact with a medical interpreter during a medical appointment; and
  • Discuss the value of a medical interpreter as a member of the rehab team.

Audience: This webinar is intended for all members of the rehabilitation team, including medical staff, nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech language pathologists, licensed psychologists, mental health professionals, and other interested professionals.

The Pennsylvania Department of Human Services (DHS) shared that, after August 1, 2023, trainers will be able to create their own Student and Practicum Observer classes on the Med Admin platform. The class creation request form will no longer be used after this date. Starting on August 2, 2023, trainers will create their own classes as needed and will no longer request class creation via the help desk. To learn about class creation, DHS will be hosting a training webinar on August 1 from 11:00 am – 12:00 pm. This training is required for all Med Admin Trainers, as it will provide a walkthrough on how to create your own classes in the new system.

The purpose of this communication is to announce that Department-approved Supports Broker recertification training is available for the first seven months of Fiscal Year 2023/24. Temple University Harrisburg will be offering some no-cost training options that are approved to meet Personal Care Home (PCH) and Assisted Living Residence (ALR) Administrator annual training requirements. The training sessions that will be offered in the fall include:

Interested individuals need only to register for one session for each topic. Please read the training announcements in full before registering to ensure you can meet the participation requirements.

Please only register for these sessions if you are sure you will be able to complete them, as participation is limited for each course. If you register and later discover you are unable to participate, please cancel your registration to create space for other participants.

The Pennsylvania Department of Drug & Alcohol Programs (DDAP) is offering an online training module “Anxiety Disorders & Substance Use Disorder (SUD): Research-Based Strategies & Treatments.” The training covers effective treatments for individuals with co-occurring anxiety and substance use disorders, including cognitive-behavioral therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, and mindfulness meditation. It includes interactive elements and takes approximately 4 hours to complete. To access the training, create or log in to your account on the TrainPA website and search for “PA-DDAP: Anxiety Disorders & SUDs” under courses.
