As part of the Pennsylvania Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs’ (DDAP) monthly technical assistance series, Mercer, the contracted actuarial firm for the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services, will lead a training from 10:00 am – 11:00 am on Monday, July 7, which will be heavily focused on the infrastructure component of the upcoming American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) ambulatory level of care (i.e., outpatient) alignment audits. The goal is to help providers understand foundational requirements and allow time to develop or refine policies prior to upcoming audits. While the record review portion of the auditing tool created by Mercer will also be discussed, the primary emphasis will be on preparing providers from a systems and infrastructure standpoint.

Mercer will also share the expected timeline for the next audit cycle and provide an overview of how behavioral health managed care organizations will conduct the audits.

The Office of Developmental Programs (ODP) contracts with Temple University Harrisburg to deliver the ODP Certified Investigator Program. ODP and Temple University have developed a new online training module that provides an additional learning opportunity designed to enhance investigatory skills and supplies helpful resources to Certified Investigators (CI), Administrative Review Committee members, CI Peer Reviewers, Incident Management (IM) Representatives, and others involved in the incident investigation process.

The Death Investigation lesson has been added to the “Additional Learning Opportunities” section on the MyODP PA ODP Certified Investigator Program home page.

Through a contract with the Pennsylvania Family Support Alliance (PFSA), the Department of Human Services’ Office of Children, Youth and Families (OCYF) is supporting a specialized training on the reporting requirements for incidents involving children served in Child Residential and Day Treatment Facilities. This training is designed for child residential facility staff, their related purchasing entities, law enforcement agencies, OCYF Regional Office Reps, MCO staff, and staff of other entities that interact with Child Residential and Day Treatment Facilities.

Training Summary:

This training is for providers and other child serving entities and clarifies what allegations must be reported to ChildLine as suspected child abuse and/or HCSIS as a reportable incident, and further clarifies when an alternative plan of supervision must be put into place. This training also teaches minimal facts interviewing skills to better determine when to make a report, and then explains how those reports of suspected child abuse are categorized and handled at ChildLine. Lastly, internal follow up recommendations and communication are discussed. Other entities that interact with these 3800 facilities are also welcome to attend – OCYF Regional Office Reps, Law Enforcement, MCOs, etc.

This training mirrors the information outlined in the OCYF Bulletin # 3800-21-01 issued January 19, 2021, and is meant as additional training (not a replacement for the mandated reporter training).

TOPIC: Autism Spectrum Disorders: An Overview and Practical Application

On behalf of the Office of Developmental Programs (ODP), due to a widespread power outage when we were scheduled to conduct the Western Region ASD Seminar in April, we have decided to hold an additional session. We welcome anyone interested to register for this event!

Reminder: This seminar satisfies the basic autism training requirement for Residential Performance-Based Contracting. Please see more details below on Continuing Education Credits.

Over the years the prevalence of autism has increased, Pennsylvania’s service delivery system for individuals with autism has expanded, and best practices to provide quality supports have emerged. To support the individual needs of each person with autism across the lifespan, an understanding of core characteristics must be established. It is also important to learn how the individual’s presentation of autism may change across settings and situations. This seminar will provide attendees with an in-depth presentation on core characteristics of autism and the impact of the characteristics on daily life, routines, and activities. A review of common terms and basic principles used to change behavior, teach new skills, and develop practical application of best practices will be included. Opportunity for discussion and engagement will occur throughout the seminar.

Who should attend?
Direct Support Professionals (DSPs), Front Line Supervisors, and Program Managers supporting individuals with autism in residential and other home and community-based settings. Professionals supporting individuals in the Adult Autism Waiver (AAW), Adult Community Autism Program (ACAP), Consolidated, Person/Family-Directed Support (P/FDS), and Community Living waivers are encouraged to attend.

Continuing Education Units (CEUs)

  • This training satisfies the basic autism training requirement for Residential Performance-Based Contracting measures CN-DD/Bx.01.1S and CN-DD/Bx.01.1CE for all DSPs, Frontline Supervisors (FLSs), and program managers.
  • This training also fulfills 6100 annual training requirements.

The Office of Developmental Programs (ODP) has shared ODPANN 25-048. This communication advises stakeholders of the release of two new skill building trainings for Direct Support Professionals (DSP).

Introduction to Skill Building introduces why it is important for direct supporters to teach skills to individuals with developmental disabilities. Services offered through the ODP waivers are habilitative. DSPs have a direct role in assisting participants in acquiring, maintaining, and improving skills that individuals need to live more independently and have meaningful participation in their communities. The training introduces why it is important for DSPs to teach skills to individuals and focuses on how to build skills so that individuals are safe, healthy, and have a good life in their community. This course is now available on MyODP and offers .5 credit hours. This is a prerequisite to the new Skill Building Basics course.
