People with intellectual disabilities have been left out of the grief conversation too many times and for far too long. Grief is hard, and supporting people through grief can be challenging, but when it comes down to it, just being there, really being there and actively listening, are the best things you can do to help someone through it. Direct support professionals wear many hats and grief supporter will be one of them at some point. On this month’s “Let Talk,” Amanda Gee shares how direct support professionals can support those who are grieving. This webinar is a companion to this month’s International Journal for Direct Support article, “Good Grief: Supporting People Through the Grieving Process.”

The Office of Developmental Programs (ODP) held a webinar for residential and day service providers, families, and Supports Coordination Organizations (SCO) to cover best practices for reopening day service provider facilities on June 6, 2022. The handout from the webinar is available for reference. Please see below:

This training is made available to RCPA members through the NEON Project, with the goal of assisting Employment Service Providers so they can offer effective services to the individuals they serve.

Improving operations and outcomes is the goal, but how do we decide what data to capture? This presentation will discuss important data metrics that improved the NEON Project’s bottom line and helped the organization improve its operations. They will also tell their story of why employment is so important.

This training will be held Friday, June 10, 2022, from 10:00 am – 11:00 am. You can register for the session here. The presenter will be Jeannine Pavlak, Chief Executive Officer at New England Business Associates.

The PA Family Support Alliance is sponsoring a free mandated reporter training entitled “Responding to Disclosures of Child Abuse.” This training is for mandated reporters who have taken training on recognizing and reporting child abuse before and need to take it again. It is 3 hours and available at no cost to mandated reporters in Pennsylvania. This training is designed to help professionals and volunteers respond to disclosures of child abuse in a way that is sensitive and supportive to the child, but without tainting the child’s memory.

The curriculum is approved by the Departments of Human Services, Education, and State and meets all requirements for training on recognizing and reporting child abuse (to include Act 126 for school employees). It is also approved for continuing education credits under Act 31 (Department of State for health-related licenses) and Act 48 (Department of Education for teachers) at no cost. PFSA will submit your training verification to the Department of State or Education as appropriate on your behalf (details provided during training).

Each person must log in through separate devices, using the unique access link emailed to them after registration to receive credit.

Presenters

Antonie J. Auguste, MD, MPH
Dr. Antonie J. Auguste has been recognized as an IDSA Fellow (FIDSA). Dr. Auguste serves the ID division at UPMC/ID Connect. Her primary role focuses on providing inpatient Infectious Diseases consultation services via the Infectious Diseases Telemedicine service to multiple additional sites across telemedicine sites and rounding on the in-person services at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital. Additionally, she provides telemedicine Infection Prevention and Control consultation to various telemedicine sites. Antonie earned her medical degree from the State University of New York Upstate Medical University at Syracuse and completed her residency in Internal Medicine and Fellowship in Infectious Disease at the State University of New York at Stony Brook University Hospital and School of Medicine. She obtained her MPH degree from Columbia University School of Public Health, and a BA degree in biology from Columbia University.

Dr. Nupur Gupta, DO, MPH
Dr. Gupta is a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Department of Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases. She completed her undergraduate and MPH studies at UCLA and received her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from Midwestern University in Phoenix, AZ. She completed her internal medicine residency at Allegheny Health Network in Pittsburgh, PA. Following her residency training, Dr. Gupta completed an Infectious Diseases fellowship with a special focus on HIV/AIDS at UPMC in Pittsburgh, PA. She has been a faculty member with UPMC since 2019. Her areas of interest include HIV treatment and prevention, medical education, infection control and prevention, and using telemedicine as a tool to reduce barriers to general ID care.

Kate Gass, RN, BSN, CIC
With a varied background in clinical nursing and nursing management, Kate has spent time working in intensive care, the emergency department, and the cardiac cath lab. Earning her ASN from Butler County College and BSN from Clarion University of Pennsylvania, she is certified as a cardiac invasive specialist and is also certified by the Board of Infection Control and Epidemiology.
